Jesus did a lot of teaching to different audiences in different places, but the Gospels record only four long multi chapter sermons theologians refer to as The Sermon on the Mount, The Bread of Life Discourse, The Olivet Discourse, and The Upper Room Discourse. Jesus’ teaching in those sermons was radically different from the religious teaching of the day. The audiences were both amazed and confused by His new message and many were unable to accept it. Primarily, Jesus was explaining the New Covenant of Grace and shattering the illusion of self righteousness that people typically have.

Throughout these sermons Jesus makes radical statements that still puzzle theologians today such as, “Do not resist him who is evil, but turn the other cheek.” Or “take the log out of your own eye”. In John 6, He said that He is the “bread of life” and “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me”. The crowds were quite often baffled at these sayings but they fit well into the context of His sermon.

If you are like me you have heard many sermons or read books that claim to explain the main teachings of Jesus Himself, but come with me and study first hand what He actually taught and meant in His main sermons.

The Apostle John was a historical person. John wrote this letter to seven literal churches in literal Asia Minor. This was confirmed as such by all the next generation theologians like Justin Martyr, Tertullian, Clement and Irenaeus. It was written during the time of Roman Emperor Domitian (90-95 A.D.) who intensely persecuted the church. It would seem reasonable that in the midst of persecution the church should be given a book of such assurance, which gives them an explanation of God’s purposes and also a promise of ultimate triumph and reward.

Lesson 2: The Prophetic History of the Church Age

John had been the head elder in the church at Ephesus and he ministered to the churches in neighboring towns. John is commanded to write to seven churches in Asia Minor in and around Ephesus. Theologians have always considered the conditions of these churches as typical of all churches for the last 2000 years.

Lesson 3: The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

Beginning in Rev 4, John’s epistle moves to future events by first giving John a vision of heaven in Rev 4 and 5. This marks an important transition from the “church age” (“the things that are” 1:19) to future end time events (“the things that will take place” 1:19). The scene shifts from matters concerning the church to a dramatic scene in heaven. The church is not mentioned again in the book of Revelation chapters 4-19. Many think the Lord’s promise to spare His church from the intense hour of testing (3:10) means the church will have been “raptured” before that time of tribulation described in chapters 6-19.

Lesson 4: Worldwide Evangelism and More Judgments

The previous lesson in Rev 6 revealed a future time of unprecedented disaster and massive slaughter as a result of God’s righteous judgment upon a world in rebellion. That action is symbolized by his unrolling a seven-sealed scroll. As He breaks each seal, a new divine judgment is poured out on the earth; and the judgments of the seventh seal containing the “trumpet” judgments will be even worse. Revelation 7 is an interlude where the reader can catch his breath and ask the question, “In the midst of all this, what will God be doing in the way of evangelism, mercy, and grace?”

Podcast Lesson 4:

Lesson 5: The Central Characters in the Tribulation

Revelation 10-11:14 is another interlude which separates the Trumpet judgments from the bowl judgments. The seventh trumpet will sound in Rev 11:15, marking the pouring out of the last series of bowl judgments which immediately precede the second coming of Christ. These judgments will be so severe that if Christ didn’t return to end them no one would survive.

Lesson 6: ARMAGEDDON

Rev 14 consists of announcements and visions assuring the reader of the coming triumph of Christ, the fall of all worldly systems, and the coming “harvest” of judgment. Rev 15-16 describes the last series of bowl judgments whereby the wrath of God will be finished.

Lesson 7: The Olivet Discourse

Tuesday night of the Passion Week – The religious leaders had rejected Christ and tried to discredit Him. Jesus denounced them in Mathew 23, turned His back on Jerusalem and told them that their house (temple) is left desolate. The kingdom would be postponed, but eventually Jesus would return as a conquering king to judge the world and set up the kingdom.

Lesson 8: The Second Coming – Revelation 19

The marriage customs of the Middle East in the first century had three aspects: contract, ceremony and feast or celebration. The marriage symbolism is fulfilled in the relationship of Christ to His Church. The contract is made at the time the church is redeemed. When Christ comes for His church at the resurrection, the second phase is fulfilled. The third phase is in view in Rev 19 – the wedding feast celebration.

Podcast Lesson 8:

Lesson 9: The Millennium and the Final Rebellion

The Millennium will be a time of restoration in which God restores the earth to its original created “Garden of Eden” type form. There will be no spiritual warfare, no exterior temptations, and no natural disasters typical of the previous fallen world.

The final rebellion (Rev 20:7-9) will fully demonstrate that so incorrigible is the nature of man that not even the Millennium can reform him. God’s power and goodness will be perfectly proven for 1000 years, yet given the opportunity, the human race will not submit to His authority. Nothing can reform the nature of man – no proof, no vision, no miracle. You must be born again, nothing else will do.

The Bible is the best selling book in history by far, and for Christians it is the very source of our information about who God is, what He has done for us, and what He expects us to do. Therefore, it is very important that we know how it came into being, who wrote it, how it was preserved, and what evidences we have that we have an accurate copy of the originals.

The New Testament is made up of 27 letters written by nine different authors over about 50 years (45-95 A.D.). The authors were either Apostles of Jesus Christ, or in Luke and Mark’s case, got their information and authority to write from the Apostles. These authors wrote at different times from different places to different audiences for different purposes, yet all of them had the same message of redemption through the atoning work of Christ on the cross. How did all these letters sent out to different places end up being gathered together into one book we call the New Testament? Who decided which books should be included or excluded? Since the writing material was so poor in the first century, how were these books preserved? What early copies do we have that help us verify what the originals said?

We will endeavor to discover just how your Bible that you read ended up just as you have it, and how we know that it is a reliable copy of what was originally written by the Apostles.

The nature of Jesus Christ is the true distinctive of Christianity. In no other religion has the leader been bodily resurrected and appeared to His followers. Historically, the nature of Christ has separated all the various cults and heresies from biblical Christianity. Whether or not Christ was the God-man or just a good religious leader determines the efficacy of His substitutionary sacrifice for us.

Lesson 4: The Holy Spirit

The third Person of the Trinity is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit possesses all the divine attributes of eternality, omnipresence, omniscience, omnipotence, and holiness. He is called by many names such as the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit of Truth, the eternal Spirit, the Comforter, and God in us. In several passages the Spirit appears as distinct from God such as at Jesus’ baptism when He descended to Jesus as the Father spoke (Luke 3). He is distinct from Jesus in that after Jesus ascended to heaven in Acts 1, the Holy Spirit descended to indwell the Apostles in Acts 2.

Lesson 5: Anthropology: The Nature of Man

In the creation account of Genesis 1-2, God systematically created the world and after each step, we are told that He saw that it was good; but after God made man, He saw that it was very good. Man is distinguished from the rest of creation as being made in the image and likeness of God. God gave man a dominion mandate to rule over God’s creation as His mediator. Part of the “image” concept is the ability to reason, communicate, and make moral choices. As God’s mediators, man and woman were to share a loving intimacy with each other, but especially with God. Love, obedience, and trust is not real unless freely given, so God put a simple test in the garden. The results of that simple test have affected all of mankind ever since.

Lesson 6: Salvation

In our biblical study of the nature of mankind (anthropology), we discovered the doctrine of what theologians call “total depravity”. Total depravity does not deny the greatness or goodness of humanity, nor the loveliness in many aspects of life. It only says that nothing can be untouched by humanity’s fall and rebellion against God. We are all sinners by position (our state of being before God), and we cannot save ourselves, therefore God must intervene and take the initiative to provide the necessary atonement.
Lesson 7: Angels in the Outfield

There are over 200 references to angels in the Bible. The most common word used for angels is “messengers”. There can be no doubt that there are celestial beings that were created by God to act as His messengers. These spiritual beings are distinct from the human or animal world in which we live. Holy angels are messengers from God sent to minister to man (Hebrews 1:14).

Lesson 8: Ecclesiology – The Doctrine of the Church

The Greek word ekklesia means “assembly”. In ancient Greece the gathering of an assembly of citizens was called ekklesia for the assembly of a group of people together in one place. In the New Testament, this is the word that was used for the congregation of believers in Christ in a given locality at least 100 times. In many cases, it was also used of all believers around the world who form what the New Testament authors called the “body of Christ”.

Lesson 9: Eschatology – The End Times

The Old Testament prophets all spoke of a future day of reckoning in which this world would be judged, evil ended, and God’s Anointed One would rule with righteousness and justice. Daniel foresaw that after all the selfishly ambitious rulers had been judged by God, “the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed” (Dan 2:44). The New Testament authors also predicted “the day of the Lord” (2 Peter 3:10) would be a time of judgment and cleansing of evil. Jesus promised to return for the church before the world is destroyed, and His disciples have always anticipated Him setting up the Kingdom of God in which He would rule (Acts 1:6).

Lesson 10: Evangelism

In Jesus’ last teaching to His disciples before the crucifixion in John 14, He gave comfort and promises to them about the future. Jesus was leaving them in person, but He would send them a “Helper” to continue the ministry. Jesus also promised them that they would do “greater things” than they had seen Him do. This was all fulfilled in Acts 2, when the Holy Spirit descended and indwelt them on a permanent basis. As a result of the filling of the Holy Spirit, 3000 believed in Jesus that first day. Jesus had given them a clear commission in Acts 1:8 to be His witnesses throughout the area and then to the world. This commission was passed on to their disciples and continues on to the church today.
